A proposal to initiate light rail service in Mendocino County will be discussed at 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the Little Lake Grange hall on School Street. As envisioned by the Mendocino County Railway Society, the meeting could spark "a rail revival in Northern California that could ultimately lead to connection with the Bay Area by means of the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) project," says the MCRS' Laird Smith SMART has allocated $50 million for rail reconstruction to north of Cloverdale, he notes.

By a 3-2 vote, the Willits City Council stopped the city staff from further exploration of a deal with the railroad to mine gravel from the city's watershed. The Northwestern Pacific Railroad Company contacted the city in June suggesting a partnership where the railroad would mine 1-2 million tons of gravel annually and transport it via rail; and in return would pay the city a royalty for the gravel and restore rail service to Willits.

| MAYBE THEY DON'T NEED FREIGHT TRAIN SERVICE NORTH OF WILLITS RIGHT NOW |
Humboldt County 2006 Regional Transportation Plan Update The analysis looked at operating the Southern segment of the NWP from Willits to Schellville with a truck transload facility in Willits. A telephone survey of the five largest lumber companies in Humboldt County was conducted by Caltrans to determine if the companies would use a transload site in Willits to support the NCRA. One lumber company said they would not accept an increase in transportation costs. Their response indicated they are trucking all of their lumber to Redding and will continue to do so until rail service returns to Eureka. The other four companies all stated they prefer having a rail connection in Eureka, but would support a Willits transload provided it did not significantly increase their transportation costs. The rail system will also have the capability to handle backhaul movements for export traffic through the Port of Humboldt Bay. The backhaul operation could generate an additional $1.5 million in revenue to the County. The alternative would be to set up a transload point at Willits.
